Maritime Alert – May 3, 2024

The Connecticut Department of Transportation announces the following:

63-Hour Bridge Closure:

The scheduled time for this closure will be from Sunday (5/5) 8pm until Wednesday (5/8) 11am.

Bridge openings for tall marine craft will be as follows:

  • Friday 5/3 at 10am, 2pm, and 5pm.
  • Saturday 5/4 at 10am, 2pm, and 5pm.
  • Sunday 5/5 at 10am, 2pm, and 5pm.
  • Monday 5/6 NO openings.
  • Tuesday 5/7 NO openings.
  • Wednesday 5/8 NO openings.
  • Thursday 5/9 at 10am and 2pm.

Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances could impact scheduled closures, any changes will be communicated. A mariner notice will be issued at least 24-hours prior to the start of a cancellation.

Be advised that the contractor is still working through the testing stages of the new mechanicals on the swing span so potential delays or openings being canceled could occur if technical issues arise during a swing attempt.

Additionally, on days when gusts are 25 mph or higher, swing span openings will be canceled. Mariners intending to pass through the bridge are encouraged to monitor the wind forecast on their navigation day and call the bridge operator.

The tide clearance board is recommended as the best reference for gauging clearance at time of passage, the board is located on the bulkhead at Goodspeed, it has been adjusted to reflect the vertical clearances in locations of the contractor’s suspended scaffold.

The contractor has reinstalled the portion of suspended scaffolding that they had temporarily removed so that they can continue with their work efforts. They will be removing sections of scaffold this weekend in a new location so boats will have additional vertical clearance to pass.

Be advised that in the location where the contractor has removed their scaffolding, there is approximately 3 feet of additional clearance.

A tide board WEBCAM for monitoring the clearance is viewable from our project website homepage on Camera 3.
